HUGUE de MACEY.
From Macey, near Pontorson and Mont-St-Michel, arrondissement Avranches, Normandy. Macey is mentioned in a charter of William Longsword of 917, "Macei dimidium cromerai." Hugo de Maci held in Huntingdonshire in 1086, and Hamo de Macy possessed nine lordships in Cheshire from Hugh Lupus, having been one of the palatinate barons, who built his castle at Dunham Massey. In 1093, he subscribed to the foundation charter of Chester abbey to which he granted lands. Robert de Macey witnessed a charter of Ranulph Meschines in the 12th century. Hamon and Roland (Rualend) de Macey are mentioned in several declarations of fiefs to the abbey of Mont-St-Michel in 1172. The family remained prominent in England, and from them sprung the barons Massey. Delisle carries Hugue de Maci and the name appears on the rolls of Scriven, Leland and Worcester.
