Woven hose appeared about the 11th century and the fibres
most commonly in use at this time was wool, whilst linen and silk, although
available, was more expensive.
Knitting it would seem, as yet had not spread to this part of the world, and
so the method of construction for items such as hose was a technique called
'sprang'.
